Just down the hill from site 3856 is site 3897, a fenced off rift with small beech trees at the top. (SigPac ED50 448238 4796197;
GPS reading above). Rift runs roughly east west with openings at both ends. The eastern end descends down an earth
slope to a calcite blockage which was opened up to be able to see into 3m deep pit. An obstruction was hammered off, opening a drop of another 2.5m.
Eastern side is 6m long to 2.5m deep pit, 2x1.5m at widest point, height 5m. The wWay on eastwards is too narrow to follow further due to a calcite choke. There is old calcite everywhere here.
At the western, end a wriggle past a block leads to an enlargement and a very sharp climb down. A bolt was placed here for the ladder. A small hole in the floor to a slope below was opened up into a 1m long, sitting size chamber with no draught and no way on. The
western end is roughly 7m long and 7m deep.
It was noted that the rift at the base of the ladder in the south wall draughts gently out and also at high level there may be a passage going off to the west.
Access requires a good climber, maypole or bolts.
