Updated 10th June 2007
A long, "walk-in" rift in the rugged karst supposed to hold the entrance
to Alpine Chough Pot (site 99). This 5m deep feature
is at the Chough coordinates but has the enlarged entrance of site 2588 at
the up hill end. Two ladders drop into a rift some 2m wide narrowing down
to 1m slot down boulders into parallel shaft. In the other direction the
rift continues some 4m to a crack and calcite (no go).
A slot through drops to the bottom of the parallel shaft. This has a boulder
floor and no obvious way on other than a general dig. The top of this shaft
is a hole to surface; this is the probable cause of the draught at the entrance.
The total depth from hole capped out was 15m.
Back on the surface this hole to the parallel shaft was found to be marked
897 with a cow ear tag - the description of site 897
does not mention the rift or parallel shaft and says it's 50m deep! It
is not - allowing for the depth of the rift it is probably 25m at most.
